Songs for the Broken Hearted
I loved this book. The characters and culture stay with you long after you close the back cover.

This book was both well-written and informative. I learned so much about Yemeni Jews in Israel and the beautiful culture they brought with them. This is the story of a Yememi woman who dies, leaving two daughters and a grandson to grieve. Zohara, the rebellious daughter, returns to Israel from overseas and gradually realizes there were substantial parts of her mother she didn't know. Although her mother was illiterate, she was a poetess and had a moving story to share. As Zohara gets to know her mother through songs, letters, and cleaning her house, we get to know Zohara and all her stuggles, hopes and dreams. There are several love stories within the stories told, and one will find this a gratifying read.
