Excellent to tell you exactly how Putin rose to power.

The best quote - "Cities raise children, Leningrad raised monsters" in the ashes of a Leningrad under a 872 day seige. Incredible book especially early years. Written by a dissident. I read it twice which I never do

Buehlman, Christopher

Really good

Disgraced knight accompanies young girl with powers to fight the "fake" Pope at the second Vatican set up in France. End battle was a bit of a letdown

Best of Chris Buehlman and that is saying a lot

Nice non-killing vampires live in NY subway lines encounter some child vampires who they try to help adjust. Very well-written and great story. Nice twist at end. If you want the best vampire novels - Salem's Lot, I am Legend, Interview with the Vampire, and Lesser Dead in no particular order

Nick Cutter

I made it 50 pages before wanting to slit my wrists

The absolute very worst writing I can remember. Every cliche and ridiculous ideas. A teenager who beats Nobel prize winners by gene splicing experiments in his bedroom. A soldier named Alice who says "you can all me Al. " I will get sued by Paul Simon for copyright infringement." Can't make this up and there is much worse writing throughout this. Absolutely one of the worst I have ever tried to read

Brooks, Max

Such a promising idea....

Skip the first 100 pages because he suffers from Stephen King disease - mistakes sheer volume of words for plot and characterization. A really good idea in a Bigfoot clan runs into a weekend getaway after a volcano drives them toward civilization. A few peripheral allusions to urban chaos in the Washington state cities. The character types and personalities have zero impact on the story. The thread running through it is it keeps referencing a diary left by one of the campers. The part after the first 100 pages is pretty good.
